In the wake of the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Malawi’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and 8 others on June 10, 2024, public calls for a thorough investigation have led President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to establish a commission of inquiry. This decision follows demands from both the Chilima family and concerned citizens to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The late Dr. Chilima’s wife, deeply affected by her husband’s passing, took to her Facebook page to voice her concerns. In her public statement, she urged the government to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the cause of the crash, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability. Her message resonated widely, drawing significant attention from Malawians who also supported the call for a formal investigation.
Despite an initial report released by German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, a German investigation company, which provided preliminary insights into the crash, the public and Chilima family believe further clarification is needed. The newly established commission of inquiry will seek to address lingering questions and ensure a comprehensive understanding of the tragic incident.
President Chakwera has responded promptly and positively to these requests by assembling a diverse investigative team. The commission includes religious, traditional, legal, and civil society perspectives. This diverse representation has been well-received by the public and the Chilima family, who view the commission’s formation as a step toward achieving justice and closure.
Dr. Ben Chilima, speaking on behalf of the Chilima family, expressed optimism regarding the commission’s work.
“We are hopeful that this commission will provide the answers we seek and deliver a satisfactory and thorough investigation,” he said.
The commission is expected to begin its work as soon as possible, tasked with investigating all aspects of the accident to determine its cause and recommend measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. This development underscores a broader commitment to transparency and accountability in the country’s leadership, particularly in addressing matters of national importance.
