MAJORITY OF MALAWIANS APPROVE GOVERNMENT EFFORTS AMID CHALLENGES, AFROBAROMETER SURVEY

The latest Afrobarometer survey has revealed that despite facing numerous challenges, the Malawian government has gained commendation for its efforts in providing key services such as water supply, reliable electricity, and addressing educational needs.

Conducted by the Afrobarometer team from the Centre for Social Research (CSR) and the University of Malawi, the survey highlights public satisfaction with these aspects of governance, while also noting areas requiring urgent attention.

“76 percent of Malawians believe the government is performing well in providing utilities, including water and electricity,” said Witness Alfonso from the Centre for Social Concern during his presentation.

However, some respondents expressed concerns about the government’s handling of the economy, underscoring the need for further interventions to address pressing economic challenges.

Afrobarometer, a non-partisan research network, has been conducting public attitude surveys across Africa since 1999, with the 10th round of surveys recently concluded in 2024. The findings shed light on citizen perspectives regarding democracy, governance, and development.

One notable insight from the survey is the overwhelming intent of Malawians to participate in the upcoming 2025 general elections, signaling strong civic engagement and confidence in the democratic process.

Presenting the findings, Alfonso, “85 percent of Malawians stated that they will definitely vote in the upcoming election. The data also shows that about 87 percent of rural residents are committed to participating in the elections.”

The mixed feedback serves as both a commendation and a call to action for policymakers. While efforts in water provision, electricity, and education are acknowledged, there remains a clear mandate for the government to work harder in improving economic conditions and other critical areas affecting citizens’ lives.

As Malawi approaches its next elections, the survey findings highlight the importance of responsive governance and targeted efforts to address citizens’ needs holistically.
