MGAWI MKANDAWIRE ELECTED ROTARY CLUB LILONGWE PRESIDENT FOR 2026

The Rotary Club of Lilongwe has elected Mgawi Mkandawire as its president for 2026. The announcement was made on Tuesday at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe by Brigadier Dan Kuwali, chairperson of the nomination committee.

Rotarian Kuwali revealed that another contender for the position was Rotarian Sam Tembenu.

In his remarks, Rotary International District 9210 Governor Thom Kamwendo expressed confidence in Mkandawire’s ability to meet the expectations of the club. He commended the efforts of Rotarians in Malawi, particularly those in Lilongwe, for their impactful initiatives aimed at improving lives.

“Let me highlight that education and health are critical areas requiring our focus,” said Kamwendo. He also emphasized the importance of peace promotion and conflict resolution as priorities for Rotarians in the district to foster peaceful communities.

Rotary International, which has been serving communities globally for over 119 years, is actively involved in supporting vulnerable people through its various programs. In Malawi, the organization operates five clubs, working collaboratively under the guidance of the District Governor, who oversees activities in Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.

The current president of the Rotary Club of Lilongwe, Rotarian Robert Chikuse, will be succeeded by President-Elect George Naphambo next year. Mkandawire will then take over the presidency in 2026.
