MODEL FAMILY COMBINES AGRICULTURE AND BUSINESS TO THRIVE IN ZOMBA

The family of Group Village Head Makungula, under Traditional Authority Nkagula in Zomba, has become a beacon of entrepreneurship, successfully combining livestock farming, irrigation agriculture, and carpentry to sustain their livelihood and support their daughter’s education.

Makungula’s wife, Gloria Walawala, shared that the family keeps layers for egg production, grows maize and vegetables through irrigation, and rears dairy cattle, sheep, and goats.

“We also run a carpentry and joinery business, which helps us make ends meet. Through these ventures, we’ve also created employment opportunities for others in our community,” Walawala explained.

The family’s agricultural proceeds have enabled them to support their children’s education, including paying tuition fees for their daughter at Stella Maris Secondary School and now at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES), where she is in her first year.

Villager Shillah Makawa praised the Makungula family for being a model of entrepreneurship and sustainability. “We rely on them for food items like eggs, vegetables, beans, onions, and milk. Their business makes it convenient for us to access these essentials at any time,” Makawa said.

The Makungula family’s diverse ventures have set an example of how rural households can achieve self-reliance and uplift their communities.
