GOVERNMENT ENFORCES TEACHER LICENSING FROM APRIL 1

The government has announced that, effective April 1, no unregistered teacher will be allowed to practice, as they have voluntarily opted out of the profession.

Director of Quality Assurance Services in the Ministry of Education, Associate Professor Golden Msilimba, made the announcement on Monday in Lilongwe during a press briefing with the Teacher’s Council of Malawi (TCM) and the Directorate of Teacher Education and Development.

Since the establishment of its secretariat in December 2023, TCM has received 6,053 applications for student teacher indexing, 93,372 for teacher registration, and 42,844 for licensing. Msilimba said all applications would be processed by February 15, after which registrants can verify their status online or in person.

“By March 31, we will have a final list of all registered teachers and education administrators. From April 1, the law will take full effect no unregistered teacher will be allowed to practice,” he stated.

Msilimba acknowledged delays in issuing registration certificates and licenses due to manual data entry. He clarified that registration is a one-time process, while licensing must be renewed every three years, with teachers paying K15,000 annually, totaling K45,000 for renewal.

TCM Registrar Grace Mphandamkoko encouraged unregistered teachers to complete the process online for faster registration. Meanwhile, Director of Teacher Education and Development, Dr. Zizwa Msukuma, assured that teachers would continue undergoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as required for license renewal.
