Activist Fredrick Malata has criticized UTM President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe for failing to attend the launch of the Saulos Klaus Chilima (SKC) Foundation in Lilongwe.
The foundation, established by Mary Chilima, widow of the late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, was launched at the Bingu International Convention Center (BICC). President Lazarus Chakwera attended the event at the official invitation of the Chilima family.
Many Malawians were surprised when UTM officials announced during a press briefing that they would not attend because President Chakwera had also been invited.
Speaking to Truth Malawi, Malata condemned Kabambe’s decision, calling it a disgrace. “By any means, Dr. Dalitso Kabambe was supposed to be there. His absence is a clear indication that he is not a mature leader,” he said.
He added that Kabambe, who should have upheld Chilima’s legacy of Osaopa, Osafooka, Osatopa (Do not fear, do not tire, do not give up), instead showed weakness by avoiding the event. “Any leader should face challenges, not boycott events simply because a competitor is present,” Malata said.
During the launch, political parties such as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the People’s Party (PP) were acknowledged for their contributions and attendance, while UTM had no representation.
However, during a press briefing in Lilongwe, Kabambe stated that UTM had contributed K10 million towards the launch. “We were prepared to attend, but we decided to cancel after learning that government officials, including the president, would be there,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Mary Chilima emphasized that she has no plans to enter politics, despite calls for her to continue her late husband’s legacy. She stated that the best way to honor him is through charity work under the SKC Foundation.
Although distancing herself from active politics, she reaffirmed her support for the UTM party and its vision, describing it as part of her late husband’s enduring legacy.
Until his passing on June 10, 2024, Dr. Saulos Chilima was Malawi’s Vice President and the founder and president of UTM.
