LACK OF TRANSPORT HINDERS POLICE WORK IN BILIRA, NTCHEU

Mobility challenges are hampering effective security services at the Bilira Police Post in Ntcheu district.

Police officers at the post struggle to address certain security concerns due to a lack of transportation, with some areas up to 30 km away remaining difficult to reach.

The issue was raised in Parliament yesterday by Ntcheu Bwanje constituency MP Alexander Mwisho Chilikumtima, who asked the Minister of Homeland Security when the problem would be resolved.

“Police officers in my constituency, especially at Bilira Police Post, often fail to arrest suspects in distant areas because of transport challenges. I sometimes have to provide my own vehicle or hire one to assist them,” Chilikumtima said.

Without vehicles or motorcycles, police are unable to provide essential services to the community.

Responding to the concerns, Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma assured Parliament that the ministry would consider addressing the mobility issue.

However, Chilikumtima expressed frustration with the repeated promises, noting, “I am very concerned that the ministry has promised to solve this issue several times, yet nothing has been done.”

While requests for police staff housing have been addressed through nationwide construction efforts, mobility and staffing shortages remain persistent challenges raised by many MPs.
