CHAKWERA RALLIES FOR FAIR TOBACCO PRICES AS MARKET SEASON OPENS

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has called for the protection of tobacco farmers’ interests, emphasising their vital role in driving Malawi’s economy.

Speaking on Wednesday at the official opening of the 2024/2025 Tobacco Market Season at the Auction Holdings Ground in Kanengo, Lilongwe, President Chakwera highlighted the farmers’ contribution to stabilising the Malawi Kwacha and boosting foreign exchange earnings.

“Our farmers are the backbone of our economy. Safeguarding their interests means safeguarding Malawi’s future,” the President stated.

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, praised farmers for producing high-quality tobacco, noting that both the ministry and buyers are impressed with this year’s crop. He expressed hope that the market will reward farmers with favourable prices.

Echoing the sentiments, Tobacco Commission Chairperson Dr. Godfrey Chapola applauded President Chakwera’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing for farmers. Dr. Chapola reported a significant increase in tobacco production this year, with output rising to 170 million kilograms from 133 million kilograms last season. He further noted that buyers had shown readiness to purchase up to 200 million kilograms.

As the market season kicks off, optimism is high that farmers will reap the rewards of their hard work, while the nation anticipates much-needed foreign exchange inflows.
