Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera have extended their congratulations to American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, now officially known as Pope Leo XIV.

In a statement released by the State House, President Chakwera conveyed Malawi’s continued spiritual solidarity and prayerful support for the new pontiff, pledging the nation’s support as he assumes leadership of the universal church.

Thousands of faithful gathered at the Vatican on Thursday evening erupted in joy as white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the successful election of the new pope. The crowd cheered once more as the doors of St. Peter’s Basilica opened and Cardinal Prevost was formally introduced to the world as Pope Leo XIV.
