President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has urged Malawi’s youth to place their trust in his leadership, promising to carry forward the vision of the country’s founding president, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
Speaking at Mzuzu Stadium during the commemoration of Kamuzu Day, Chakwera acknowledged that many young people were not alive during Banda’s era but stressed that they can still help realize his dream by supporting ongoing national development efforts.
“I know that many of you believe in a better future for Malawi. It is possible to make Malawi the nation that Kamuzu dreamt of,” said Chakwera. “For this dream to come true, you do not need to surrender this country to those who destroyed it. Allow me to continue building it until 2030.”
Chakwera’s remarks came after a sermon by Reverend Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu, who based his message on Mark 10:42-45. Reverend Nyirenda urged political leaders to approach the upcoming September elections with humility and a spirit of service.
“As we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Banda, we as leaders must live humble lives that prioritize the people,” said Nyirenda. “It is only leaders with pure intentions and humility that God honors.”
He praised Dr. Banda for his dedication to excellence, noting that his legacy is still visible in Malawi’s enduring infrastructure. He also described Banda as a principled leader who was unafraid to confront wrongdoing.
Despite chilly and rainy weather, hundreds gathered at the stadium to commemorate the day under the theme: “Kamuzu: The Benchmark of Servant Leadership, Uniting Malawians and Prospering Together.”
