CHAKWERA DONATES K50 MILLION, BECOMES PATRON OF MALAWI NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAMS

His Excellency President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has donated K50 million to support the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, as they prepare for the 2024 COSAFA Cup in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

The donation follows a meeting between President Chakwera and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya at Kamuzu Palace. During the meeting, the President also accepted FAM’s request to become the official Patron of both the Flames and the Scorchers, Malawi’s women’s national team.

In his new role, President Chakwera will lead efforts to rally moral, financial, and material support for the national teams. State House Press Officer Anthony Kasunda confirmed the President’s commitment, stating that Dr. Chakwera will spearhead fundraising efforts to ensure the teams are fully supported.

The Flames have already arrived in South Africa and are set to face Lesotho in their opening Group B fixture. With strong backing from the Head of State, the team enters the tournament with renewed motivation and national pride.
