MALAWI RECEIVES FIRST FUEL SHIPMENT FROM MIDDLE EAST

Malawi has received its first consignment of fuel from the Middle East under a new government-to-government procurement arrangement.

The shipment, delivered by the vessel MT Virgo, docked at Tanga Port in Tanzania on Tuesday. It consists of 50 million litres of petrol and diesel, marking a significant step in efforts to stabilise Malawi’s fuel supply.

Speaking at the port, Malawi’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Andrew Kumwenda, expressed optimism over the development. He noted that the Tanzanian government had played a crucial role in facilitating Malawi’s access to the port, enabling the efficient offloading and transit of the fuel.

Kumwenda also confirmed that fuel tankers have started arriving in Malawi, signalling the beginning of what government hopes will be a consistent and dependable supply chain.

“This new system of fuel procurement will bring much-needed relief to the country and help stabilise the fuel situation,” said Kumwenda.

The delivery comes amid recurring fuel shortages in Malawi and is seen as part of broader government efforts to diversify supply routes and ensure energy security.
