Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has commended the Catholic Women’s Association (CWA) for their initiative to purchase a bus to support their operations.
Speaking at Zomba Cathedral during the Chilundu Fundraising event, held under the theme “Women, Let’s Buy a Bus,” Bishop Chaima praised the women’s unity, faith, and determination despite the country’s economic challenges. The CWA aims to raise nearly K60 million for the project.
“This effort shows the spirit of unity and purpose among you. Let our culture help us stay connected to God and strengthen our families and communities,” said Bishop Chaima.

Guest of honor Daisy Kambalame, CEO of the Confederation of Chambers and Industry, described the initiative as visionary. She encouraged the women to ensure the bus benefits not only the association but also the wider church and to use it to generate income for the association’s sustainability. Her primary message was a call for unity.
Also addressing the gathering, Atupele Muluzi emphasized the pivotal role women play in the church. He urged them to keep God at the center and maintain a clear vision for the church’s progress.
CWA Chairperson Christina Lakiyoni said the goal of the fundraiser is to acquire a bus to serve the association’s activities. She called on all members to avoid divisions and work together to meet their target.
Over 5,000 women from all 20 parishes of Zomba Diocese and even some from the Archdiocese of Blantyre took part in the fundraising event.
