SHINE RELIEF TRUST PROMOTES YOUTH WELLNESS THROUGH PICKLEBALL IN ZOMBA

A faith-based organization, Shine Relief Trust, in Zomba District has encouraged young people to embrace physical exercise as a way of promoting healthy living and positive behavior.

Speaking at the organization’s offices in Zomba, Shine Relief Trust Executive Director Suzen Zidana said the trust has introduced Pickleball to engage youth in fun and healthy activities while keeping them away from immoral behavior, alcohol, and drug abuse.

Zidana explained that the idea was introduced by Jin Kim, a 17-year-old volunteer from South Korea, as a stress-relief initiative for young people affected by Cyclone Freddy. She expressed gratitude to Kim for not only introducing the sport but also constructing a Pickleball court for the community.

“I’m grateful to Jin Kim for introducing Pickleball. It has created a safe space for young people, helping them avoid destructive behaviors,” said Zidana.

One of the participants, Patience Tambulasi, a Form 2 student at Malindi Secondary School, said playing Pickleball has helped her stay healthy and focused. Tambulasi, who is also supported by Shine Relief Trust with school fees, urged fellow youth to stay active and committed to education so they can become financially independent.

Another beneficiary, Walunji Nyirongo, noted that the sport has sharpened young people’s thinking skills, reduced immoral behavior among girls, and renewed their interest in school.

Apart from sports, Shine Relief Trust also supports girls facing challenges in accessing education by paying their school fees. Some beneficiaries attend Malindi Secondary School, Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, and others. The organization also supports orphans, early childhood development programs, and teenage mothers.
