President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has urged graduates from the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) to become agents of productivity and national development.
Speaking in Thyolo on Thursday during the university’s 6th congregation, where 551 students received certificates, diplomas, and degrees, Chakwera said Malawi must shift “from being a nation of consumers to a nation of producers.”
“As you step out into the world, remember that the potential of MUST will be judged through you,” said Chakwera, who is also Chancellor of the university.
He praised MUST for advancing socio-economic growth in entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and agriculture.
MUST Council Chairperson Boyd Luwe highlighted the institution’s remarkable growth since its 2014 inception — student enrolment has risen from 150 to over 5,200, academic programmes have expanded to 27 undergraduate and 21 postgraduate offerings, including PhDs.
Luwe also revealed that the MUST Endowment Fund, launched in 2021 to support disadvantaged students, now stands at about K7 billion.
The graduation was held under the theme “Aligning Skills and Knowledge with Industry and Community Needs.”
