MEC URGES MEDIA TO RELY ON OFFICIAL SOURCES AHEAD OF ELECTIONS

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged journalists to rely solely on MEC as the official source of election information to prevent the spread of misinformation.

This call was made during a media training session held in Lilongwe, organized by Gazette Media in partnership with Bwaira Media Club.

MEC’s Director of Communications, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, reminded journalists of their critical role in the upcoming general elections slated for 16 September 2025. He cautioned against allowing political parties or individuals to spread false stories that could mislead the public.

Mwafulirwa further advised the media to seek guidance directly from MEC to ensure they disseminate accurate and credible information.

Andrew Viano of Zodiak Broadcasting Station echoed this sentiment, stressing that the media must conduct thorough research to provide the public with timely and factual information.

“Our role as media is to give people the right direction with accurate information on a daily basis to help them make informed decisions,” said Viano.

The training was attended by journalists from various media houses and online platforms in the central region under Bwaira Media Club.
