The Ministry of Local Government, through the office of the Zomba District Commissioner (DC), has promoted seven chiefs in a bid to strengthen traditional leadership and enhance community development.
The promotions include three Traditional Authorities (T/As) Nkagula, M’biza, and Kumtumanje who have been elevated to Senior Chief. Sub-Traditional Authorities Namadidi, Nkapita, and Lamusi have been promoted to Traditional Authority, while Group Village Head (GVH) Kamwendo is now a Sub-Traditional Authority.
Speaking during the ceremony, Zomba DC Reinghard Chavula urged the chiefs to uphold the law, serve their people with integrity, and avoid corruption. She stressed that chiefs must deliver fair justice in their local courts to reduce the financial burden on communities traveling long distances for court cases.
“If chiefs make their local courts just and fair, people will live peacefully and avoid unnecessary economic hardships,” Chavula said.
Director of Chiefs Affairs, Charles Makanga, echoed the call for accountability, urging the chiefs to safeguard cultural traditions, promote education, and discourage early marriages. He added that the ministry would continue recognizing and rewarding deserving leaders.
On behalf of the newly promoted chiefs, T/A Lamusi expressed gratitude to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for the recognition, pledging commitment to serving the people of Zomba.
