In a move aimed at strengthening ties between Northern Region legislators and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the two sides have agreed to support UTM legislator Hon. Dr. Catherine Mzumara for the position of First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
According to Northern Region Alliance Chairperson Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo, who chaired the meeting of Northern Region legislators, members unanimously endorsed Hon. Dr. Mzumara as their preferred candidate for First Deputy Speaker. The meeting also agreed to back Hon. Sameer Suleman for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly.
UTM leader in the House, Hon. Patricia Kaliati, confirmed the development, stating that the party had endorsed Dr. Mzumara’s candidacy and reached a mutual understanding with the DPP to support each other in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The Northern Region, which has 37 legislators, has shown unity in backing Hon. Dr. Catherine Mzumara.
Meanwhile, legislators from the North have told the media that their relationship with the DPP continues to grow stronger, citing the recent election of Hon. Enock Chihana as Second Deputy Speaker as another sign of collaboration between the two groups.
