Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha on Wednesday called for deliberate measures to support persons with disabilities in the country.
Navicha made the remarks in Parliament when she presented a statement marking the National Observance of Disability Rights Awareness Month.
She expressed concern that people with albinism continue to face serious challenges in the country.
“As the country, we should consider allocating part of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) towards disability-related programmes as part of deliberate measures to protect them”, said Navicha.
She said it is worrying that attacks on people with albinism persist, including reports of grave exhumations targeting their remains.
The minister also said that people with various disabilities still struggle to access essential services due to barriers created by some of the infrastructure being constructed in towns.
