SAVE THE CHILDREN JOINS MALAWI IN MARKING INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Save the Children on Tuesday joined the Government of Malawi and several non-governmental organizations in commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, an annual global observance promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

This year’s event was held under the theme “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”

The Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Honourable Mary Navicha, served as Guest of Honour. In her address, she applauded civil society organizations for their financial and technical support toward the commemoration. She urged stakeholders to champion inclusivity by ensuring that public infrastructure—such as offices and schools—is accessible and disability-friendly.

A key moment of the event featured 13-year-old Misheck Phiri, a visually impaired learner from Chilanga Inclusive School. Misheck demonstrated to the Minister how the blind classroom system, an innovation developed by Staff Nyoni of Access Ability Africa, is improving the learning experience for him and other visually impaired students.

Another partner, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), showcased initiatives aimed at equipping young people with life skills to support their livelihoods.

This year’s commemoration took place at Kabiri Ground in Embangweni, Mzimba District.
