VICE PRESIDENT URGES PEOPLE TO RELOCATE FROM DISASTER PRONE AREAS

The Vice President of this country, Dr. Jane Ansah, has appealed to people who live in areas that experience sudden disasters every year to move to higher ground and and build stronger houses in order to protect their lives and their property.

Dr. Ansah made the remarks at GVH Chisutu in the area of Senior Chief Malemia in Zomba district, where she went to distribute maize, blankets, and plastic buckets for drawing water to people who were affected by a rainstorm that destroyed their houses and property.

A total of 112 households in Zomba District were affected by the rainstorm that hit on Monday evening, and out of these, 69 households are from the area of Senior Chief Malemia.

She said that the President, Professor Peter Mutharika, is concerned about the disaster and that the government will assist all those affected by sudden disasters, knowing that they do not have food.

The Vice President also urged people to plant trees this rainy season in their communities, saying these disasters are happening because of climate change and the reckless cutting down of trees.

“No one should die of hunger because the government will distribute maize to the 38,000 households that are facing hunger in Zomba District.” She said.

Speaking at the same event, the Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa Grace Kwelepeta thanked the President, Professor Peter Mutharika, for sending his Vice President to distribute food and blankets to the people affected by sudden disasters in the area.

One of the people affected by the disaster, Juma Kapito of Kapile Village in the area of Senior Chief Malemia, thanked the government for giving them maize and blankets after the disaster destroyed their property.
