GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR STRONGER INDUSTRY COMMITMENT

The Ministry of Industrialization, Business, Trade and Tourism has urged companies across Malawi to increase re-investment and embrace innovation if they are to contribute meaningfully to the country’s industrialization agenda.

Principal Secretary Wiskies Nkombezi made the call during the inaugural awards ceremony recognising Malawian companies that excelled in 2025 across key areas aligned with the enablers and pillars of the Malawi 2063 vision. The event was organised by the Strategies Investment Forum.

Nkombezi stressed that government remains committed to promoting modern technology adoption and technical advancement within all three pillars of Malawi 2063: Agricultural Productivity and Commercialization, Industrialization and Urbanization. He said rewarding high performers creates an incentive for other companies to raise their standards.

He noted that sustained innovation is essential for Malawi to unlock new economic opportunities and build competitive industries capable of driving long-term national development.

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry president, Dr. Wisley Phiri, said the private sector stands ready to reinvest and accelerate progress in all enablers of Malawi 2063. However, he emphasized that this commitment depends on government maintaining stable, predictable and business-friendly policies.

Phiri added that consistency in regulation remains a critical factor in attracting capital, reducing risk and encouraging firms to innovate without fear of abrupt policy changes.

Several companies were recognised for outstanding performance in various industrialization metrics. Award recipients included Nico Holdings, National Bank, NBS Bank, Illovo Sugar, Total Land Care and Ellis Properties, each honoured in their respective categories.

Organisers said the awards aim to inspire greater corporate ambition, celebrate excellence and reinforce the central role of the private sector in advancing Malawi’s long-term development vision.
