LANGUAGE PLAYS CRITICAL ROLE IN DELIVERY OF JUSTICE – CHIEF JUSTICE

The Chief Justice of Malawi, Rizine R. Mzikamanda, has emphasized that language plays a vital role in the fair administration of justice in the country.

Justice Mzikamanda made the remarks during a certificate presentation ceremony for court interpreters and court reporters, where 16 participants were awarded certificates after successfully completing training in court language interpretation.

He noted that effective interpretation is essential because many court proceedings are conducted in English, a language that is not fully understood by all litigants who appear before the courts.

The Chief Justice said the training program was introduced to enhance access to justice by ensuring that accused persons, witnesses, and other court users clearly understand proceedings affecting their rights and obligations.

He added that proper interpretation helps to prevent misunderstandings that could negatively affect the outcome of cases, stressing that justice must not only be done but must also be understood by all parties involved.

Justice Mzikamanda further commended the trainees for their commitment and encouraged them to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and integrity in the execution of their duties within the justice system.

The training initiative, he said, reflects the judiciary’s continued efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and promote fairness in the handling of cases across the country.
