President Donald Trump has announced that the United States has carried out a major military strike against fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) group in north-western Nigeria.
According to Trump, the operation was both powerful and highly effective, aimed at weakening the group’s presence in the region.
He referred to IS fighters as “terrorist scum,” accusing them of carrying out brutal attacks and killings.
Trump specifically claimed that the group had been targeting innocent civilians, particularly Christians, in its violent campaign.
The US president said the American military “executed numerous perfect strikes” during the operation.
US Africa Command, also known as Africom, confirmed that the strike took place on Thursday.
Africom stated that the attack was conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities in Sokoto State.
However, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar told the BBC that the mission was a joint counter-terrorism effort and stressed that it “has nothing to do with a particular religion.”
