A wave of new senior appointments in Malawi’s public sector has placed Gladys Ganda firmly in the spotlight, following her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB).
Her appointment, alongside other key figures including Yeremiah Chihana at Blantyre Water Board, Julius Chione at Northern Region Water Board, and Edna Manda at Sunbird Tourism, signals what many see as a strategic reshaping of leadership in critical sectors.
For Ganda, affectionately known as “GG,” the appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter—one that blends her political experience with executive responsibility.
Messages of congratulations have poured in, celebrating her achievement and expressing confidence in her ability to lead.
With a background in economics and banking, Ganda spent two decades at the Reserve Bank of Malawi and later served as Deputy CEO of the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), as well as a Presidential Advisor.
Her transition into the water sector is viewed as part of government efforts to strengthen service delivery in the southern region.
The Southern Region Water Board plays a critical role in supplying water to millions, and expectations are high that her leadership will improve infrastructure development and service efficiency.
Amid the noise, Ganda’s personal story continues to resonate. Born in Tengani, Nsanje, she has built her political career within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), earning trust and leadership roles over time, including election to key positions during the party’s convention last year.
Her journey from public service and politics to leading a major parastatal reflects both experience and resilience—qualities supporters believe will define her tenure.
As Malawi navigates both leadership transitions and political contestation, Ganda’s appointment stands as a focal point of hope for improved service delivery, while also highlighting the need for respectful and issue-driven political discourse.
