MCP BLASTS DPP OVER WORSENING ECONOMIC CRISIS IN MALAWI

Tensions over Malawi’s economic direction escalated on Wednesday as senior figures from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) delivered a pointed critique of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), accusing it of mismanaging the economy and deepening hardship for ordinary citizens.

At a press briefing held at the party’s National Headquarters in Lilongwe, MCP officials—led by Campaign Director Hon. Moses Kumkuyu, MP—outlined what they described as a growing list of economic failures.

Joining him were Publicity Secretary Hon. Professor Jessie Kabwila, Director of Political Affairs Hon. Maxwell Thyolera, and NEC member Hon. Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya, MP, among others.

Kumkuyu painted a stark picture of daily life for many Malawians, highlighting persistent fuel shortages that have left filling stations dry across the country. He also pointed to a worsening foreign exchange crisis, saying the scarcity of forex is crippling businesses and limiting access to essential imports.

Agriculture, a backbone of Malawi’s economy, also came under focus. Kumkuyu criticized what he described as poor pricing for farm produce and a lack of meaningful support for the tobacco sector—long regarded as a key source of national revenue.

The MCP official further dismissed the government’s explanation that global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, are to blame for fuel supply disruptions.

He argued that such justifications were inconsistent with the DPP’s past stance when it was in opposition, and insisted the current administration must take responsibility for its economic decisions.
Adding weight to the criticism, Hon. Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya, a taxation expert, took aim at the government’s fiscal policies.

He argued that the current taxation approach is placing an unsustainable burden on citizens already grappling with high living costs.

Chaziya specifically called for the removal of taxes on rentals, scrap metal, and mobile money transactions, describing them as unjustified and harmful. According to him, over-taxation is squeezing household incomes and making it increasingly difficult for families to meet basic needs.

The press briefing underscored the MCP’s broader political message: that the DPP government must be held accountable for the country’s economic challenges.

At the same time, party officials signaled their intent to present alternative solutions aimed at easing the financial strain on Malawians.

As economic pressures continue to mount, today’s address reflects a deepening political divide over how best to steer the country through its current difficulties.
