MUTHARIKA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO DECENTRALISED DEVELOPMENT

President Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to advancing development through local councils, describing decentralisation as a key driver for improving service delivery at community level.

The President made the remarks during a meeting with Isaac Jomo Osman held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, where he highlighted the importance of empowering local structures to spearhead development initiatives.

Mutharika said the government’s allocation of K5 billion under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting grassroots development across the country.

He explained that the funding will benefit all constituencies, enabling local councils to implement projects that directly address the needs of their communities.

“My administration remains committed to delivering essential development across the country,” said Mutharika. “Through this funding, we want to ensure that every constituency has the means to improve the lives of its people.”

The President noted that equipping local councils with adequate resources will enhance service delivery, strengthen accountability, and accelerate the implementation of development projects.

He added that decentralisation allows decision-making to take place closer to the people, making development efforts more relevant and effective.

Mutharika also stressed the need for strong cooperation between central government and local authorities, saying such partnerships are vital in addressing challenges facing urban areas and restoring cities to better standards.

He identified improved infrastructure, strengthened waste management systems, and proper urban planning as critical steps toward enhancing conditions in Malawi’s cities.

Mayor Osman welcomed the government’s continued support, noting that the increased funding will help councils deliver meaningful development projects.

He said local authorities remain committed to working closely with government to ensure that resources are used responsibly and bring tangible benefits to communities.

The government continues to prioritise decentralisation as a central strategy for national development, with a focus on ensuring that progress reaches citizens at all levels of society.
