The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has launched an investigation into public complaints over the rapid depletion of mobile data bundles on TNM and Airtel Malawi networks.
The Authority announced the probe in a Public Notice dated 29th September, 2026, signed by its Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma, PhD.
According to MACRA, it has noted growing concerns from consumers who feel their data bundles are running out faster than expected despite limited usage.
Nkoloma said they are now investigating the matter, including assessing the operators’ data charging and billing systems, data usage records and the accuracy of data deductions from customers’ bundles.
The investigation, the Authority says, seeks to establish factors contributing to the concerns raised and to determine whether any regulatory intervention is required.
In the meantime, MACRA has encouraged consumers who have experienced unusually rapid depletion of data bundles to report their experiences to the Authority through dg@macra.mw or the toll-free number 261.
The regulator says where available, consumers should provide supporting information such as bundle purchase notifications, data usage alerts, screenshots, dates and times of the reported incidents and any other relevant records that may assist the investigation.
MACRA has assured the public that it will communicate the outcome of the investigation once the exercise is concluded.
The news has attracted a lot of reactions on social media, with many people welcoming the development.
Some consumers say when they buy a data bundle meant to last a week, it gets depleted within two or three days.
The investigation is expected to benefit many Malawians, considering that most activities today involve digital platforms which require affordable and reliable data.
