A 21-year-old woman has died while four others have sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned several times in the early hours of Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Boolera Bridge along the Monkey Bay–Mangochi Road in Mangochi District.
Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi identified the deceased as Biasha Daudi, 21, of Mgundaphiri Village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District.
Daudi said the accident involved a Volkswagen Jetta, registration number CP 9814, driven by Bonface Mlongoti, 43, from the direction of Monkey Bay towards Mangochi Boma with four passengers on board.
She added that upon arrival at Boolera Bridge, Mlongoti reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and hit the bridge’s metal barrier.
“The vehicle subsequently swerved to the nearside and overturned several times before resting on its own,” the publicist explained.
According to her, following the impact, Daudi sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mangochi District Hospital.
The driver and the remaining three passengers, identified as Bob Kum’bweza Banda, 32, Jazira Matonga, 20, and Magret Pongolani, 33, sustained multiple fractures and were admitted to Mangochi District Hospital for treatment.
Police in Mangochi are appealing to motorists to observe road safety measures, particularly speed limits, to prevent road accidents and loss of life.
