Secretary to the Treasury, Betchani Tcheleni, has called on business journalists to provide a well-rounded perspective on Malawi’s economic standing by covering both constructive and positive stories about the nation’s economy and business operations.
Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Association of Business Journalists (ABJ) in Mangochi, which runs from September 27 to 28, 2024, Tcheleni highlighted the critical role of balanced reporting in shaping public perception and fostering economic stability.
“Malawi’s economy is experiencing shocks due to both internal and external factors, which continue to disrupt plans for economic recovery. However, it is crucial for journalists to highlight not only the challenges but also the positive developments and opportunities within our economy,” Tcheleni stated.
The meeting is held under the theme: “Economic Resilience: Unpacking Malawi’s Path to Recovery in the Aftermath of Ravaging Exogenous Shocks.” This theme reflects the nation’s commitment to rebuilding and strengthening its economy in the face of various challenges.
Tcheleni emphasized that while the media plays an essential role in reporting on the economic difficulties facing the country, it is equally important to focus on success stories and initiatives that can inspire hope and drive progress.
By providing a balanced overview of Malawi’s economic landscape, Tcheleni believes that journalists can help foster a more informed public discourse and encourage investment and growth in the nation’s economy. The Secretary’s call to action comes at a crucial time as Malawi navigates through economic recovery efforts, aiming to create a more resilient future.
