Engineer Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka has commended the Catholic Church for its significant contribution to education through its schools. He made these remarks during the centenary celebrations at Nankhunda Minor Seminary in the Diocese of Zomba.
Dr. Mtumbuka noted that the Catholic Church has established several secondary and primary schools, in addition to seminaries, which consistently perform well in national examinations. He urged Catholic parents to consider sending their children to Nankhunda Seminary to pursue the priesthood within the country’s dioceses.
He also called on Catholics to support Nankhunda Seminary with financial and material resources, pointing out the seminary’s challenges, including shortages of food, desks, and bedding in the hostels.
“Education is key to a child’s future, and I am grateful to the Catholic Church for establishing Nankhunda Seminary. I urge Catholics to assist the seminary in any way they can,” he added.
Fr. Santos Mpingu, Rector of Nankhunda Minor Seminary, echoed these sentiments, appealing for more support to address the institution’s pressing needs to ensure it continues offering quality education.
Nankhunda Minor Seminary, located at the foot of Zomba Mountain in Traditional Authority Mlumbe, was founded in 1924 by Bishop Louis Auneau. The seminary has educated notable leaders, including Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa, Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, and the late Archbishop Matias Chimole, among others.
