Her Liberty and Girls Activist Youth Organisation (GAYO) have empowered youths from various clubs in Senior Chief Malemia’s area, Zomba, with crucial knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and the dangers of unsafe abortion. The initiative aims to equip the youths to educate their peers on these important issues.
The two organizations are running a project, with financial support from Amplify Change (UK), to promote SRHR and reduce unsafe abortions in the community.
At the conclusion of a two-day training at Songani Primary School, Project Officer Kettie Mikwala emphasized the importance of this initiative. The youths were trained to engage traditional leaders, teachers, faith leaders, and fellow community members. Mikwala urged the participants to apply what they had learned with dedication to ensure that SRHR knowledge spreads throughout the community.
Arnold Mndalira, Health Promotion Officer at Zomba Health Office, advised the youth to use clear language when communicating these messages, ensuring they reach the intended audience effectively. He also highlighted the importance of understanding SRHR issues and the risks of sexually transmitted infections.
Chimwemwe Makawa, a youth representative from Limbikani Youth Club, praised Her Liberty and GAYO for the training and encouraged her fellow participants to share the information widely within their villages.
The project aims to reach over 5,000 youths in the Senior Chief Malemia area within 12 months.
