MWAKASUNGULA URGES MALAWIANS TO EMBRACE PLANE CRASH REPORT

Governance and Human Rights Advocate, Undule Mwakasungula, has called on Malawians to reflect on the findings of the Commission of Inquiry into the tragic June 10, 2024, plane crash that claimed the lives of Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others.

The Commission released its detailed report on Saturday, identifying environmental and human factors as possible contributors to the accident.

Mwakasungula emphasized the importance of the report not only for its findings but for its potential to help the nation heal.

“The report is comprehensive, addressing all the key areas outlined in the Commission’s Terms of Reference. It provides an in-depth analysis of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy,” he said.

Despite praising the report’s thoroughness, Mwakasungula highlighted a critical shortfall: the absence of a specified timeframe for implementing the recommendations. He noted that this could hinder progress in preventing similar tragedies.

The inquiry, initiated by President Lazarus Chakwera, faced challenges, including the resignation of two commissioners, Sylvester Namiwa and Pastor Tony Nyirenda. Their departure raised concerns about the Commission’s internal cohesion and the investigation’s integrity.

As Malawians digest the findings, Mwakasungula urged the public to engage with the report constructively, ensuring its recommendations lead to meaningful action.
