The Civil Servants Trade Union (CSTU) is set to meet the Government Negotiating Team tomorrow in Lilongwe to discuss its demands.
Weeks ago, the union threatened to stage a nationwide strike if the government failed to address concerns presented in August 2025. In a letter to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), CSTU issued a 14-day ultimatum for a response.
Union members, speaking anonymously, said the meeting’s outcome will determine whether the planned strike proceeds.
“Preparations for the nationwide strike were set for February 25, but we will wait for the meeting’s results,” one member stated.
CSTU’s demands include salary increases, restructuring, higher leave grants, and improved transport and special allowances for civil servants.
CSTU president Lameck Magawa recently expressed frustration over delays, saying, “We gave the government 14 days to respond to our demands before taking further action.”
Civil servants are seeking a 44% salary hike, citing rising living costs following the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha, which has caused monthly increases in basic commodity prices.
