African Harmony Corrective, a local NGO, has urged learners at Sakata Primary School in Zomba to actively participate in tree planting to restore vegetative cover in deforested areas.
The organization’s Community Development Officer, Dafter Molandi, made the call during a tree-planting exercise where 1,000 seedlings were planted at the school, located under Traditional Authority Nkagula.
Molandi praised the school for its environmental commitment and encouraged learners to protect the trees from wildfires and grazing animals to ensure a high survival rate.
“Irresponsible cutting of trees affects people’s livelihoods. We are here to help restore the vegetative cover,” he said.
Sakata Primary’s environmental teacher, Chisomo Moyo, commended the NGO for involving students in environmental conservation.
“Trees offer numerous benefits, including acting as windbreaks, purifying air, and providing shade,” Moyo noted.
Lexa Kaombe, a Standard 7 learner, pledged to motivate her peers to care for the newly planted trees to ensure they thrive for future generations.
