The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) will conduct SIM card re-registration and cellphone registration to curb fraud and other cybercrimes, Director General Daud Suleman has announced.
Speaking at a public lecture at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) under the theme “Digital Rights: The Law, The Technology, and The Myths,” Suleman emphasized the need for stricter regulations to prevent financial cybercrimes.
He attributed the rise in fraud to individuals registering multiple SIM cards and others using identity cards of deceased persons. To address this, SIM card registration will now require a valid National Registration Bureau (NRB) ID.
“As MACRA, we engage various stakeholders—including the media, politicians, university students, and academic staff—to ensure inclusive regulation of communication,” Suleman said.
UNIMA lecturer Dr. Kondwani Munthali praised MACRA’s initiative, stating that the university can play a key role in raising awareness about digital rights.
Student Nohakera Khanje found the lecture insightful, saying she has learned how to protect herself from fraudsters.
