MCP CONDEMNS MPONELA VIOLENCE, URGES CALM PENDING INVESTIGATIONS

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has condemned the political violence that erupted on Sunday in Mponela, Dowa District, describing it as a threat to democracy.

In a statement, MCP National Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila expressed concern over the incident and raised suspicions about whether the violence may have been staged, noting that individuals were able to take photographs and secure media coverage during the chaos.

While the party has opted to remain silent until investigations are complete, Kabwila reaffirmed MCP’s commitment to non-violence, unity, and democratic values.

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Executive Director, Gift Trapence, urged the police to expedite investigations and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. He also called on all political parties to denounce violence and promote peace ahead of the 16th September general election.

Malawi Police Service spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed that investigations are underway and assured the public that the perpetrators will face justice.
