At a rally in Dowa, former Finance Minister and Lilongwe Msozi North MP, Hon. Sosten Gwengwe, praised President Lazarus Chakwera for implementing systems aimed at stabilizing Malawi’s economy.
Gwengwe likened Chakwera’s “Malawi First” approach to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, emphasizing that prioritizing local interests is key to achieving sustainable economic growth.
He commended the government for pushing economic reforms without relying on donor aid, stating that self-reliance is critical for national independence.
“President Chakwera is focusing on mining, agriculture, and tourism as engines for economic growth. This will encourage domestic investment and promote support for locally made products and services,” Gwengwe said.
He added that continued dependence on aid would keep Malawi poor, citing the U.S. decision to cut foreign assistance as an example of putting national interests first.
“If Chakwera is given another five years, Malawi will transform for the better because he is a visionary leader,” he said.
Speaking at the same rally, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda said the party is organizing rallies to mobilize and empower members ahead of the September 16 general elections.
Regional Chairperson Zebron Chilondola added that the party will visit all constituencies to foster unity, especially in the aftermath of divisive primary elections.
