The National Development Party (NDP) has warned that no single political party is likely to secure the required 50+1 percent of votes in the September 16 elections without forming alliances.
In a press release, the party, led by Frank Mwenifumbo, urged opposition parties to unite to achieve the constitutional majority needed to win the presidency.
The NDP revealed it is currently in talks with two opposition parties about forming a coalition, though the discussions are still ongoing. It added that other parties have also expressed interest, stressing that the door remains open to any opposition groups that share the NDP’s vision of improving the lives of Malawians.
However, the party made it clear that it is ready to contest the elections independently if no alliance is reached, noting it has already collected its nomination papers. The NDP also encouraged its supporters to remain steadfast.
Malawians are set to vote for the president, members of parliament, and local councilors in the tripartite elections on September 16, organized by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
