CHAKWERA CREDITS NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT TO 2020 VOTE, SEEKS CONTINUED SUPPORT

President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday launched the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) 2025 campaign for the northern region at M’mbelwa Stadium in Mzimba, where he thanked the people of the North for their decisive vote in the 2020 fresh presidential elections.

Chakwera said the region’s support in 2020 laid the foundation for various development projects being implemented under his administration.

“If you look at this stadium here in Mzimba, the Youth Centre in Mzuzu, the Library at Mzuzu University, the 100,000 families accessing clean and portable water in Nkhata Bay and Rumphi, and the airports in Mzuzu and Karonga, all that is because of the vote you gave me,” he said.

He further highlighted that over 63,000 businesses in the North have been established through the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) with loans amounting to K54 billion.

“I will not labour a lot campaigning like those in the opposition because you know what we have started, and we need to continue. For projects like Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa University, the delay was due to resource mobilization, but now we have secured the resources. All I need is your vote to continue this,” Chakwera added.

Speaker of the National Assembly and MCP First Vice President, Catherine Gotani Hara, praised Chakwera as one of the country’s most caring leaders.

“While he had every right to focus on visible infrastructure, Chakwera also cared for Malawians’ immediate needs during crises like COVID-19, Cyclone Freddy, and other climate-related disasters. He provided relief to those in distress while still delivering physical developments,” Hara said.

Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda also commended Chakwera for ensuring inclusive governance by appointing people from the North to key cabinet positions, describing him as a President for all Malawians.
