President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has emphasized the unifying power of cultural events and the critical role traditional leaders play in promoting peace within communities.
Speaking on Saturday evening during the Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEFO) Fundraising Dinner at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, President Chakwera praised CHEFO for organizing the event, describing it as “a great opportunity” to engage with the Chewa community.
The President called on Malawians to embrace national unity, stressing that peaceful coexistence among the country’s diverse cultural groups is essential for sustained development.
“We are all one people before God. As we celebrate, let us learn to live harmoniously with others from different backgrounds to ensure lasting peace in our country,” Chakwera said.

He further urged traditional leaders to take an active role in mobilizing citizens to vote in the upcoming September 16 elections and to be ambassadors of peace throughout the campaign season.
CHEFO Chairperson, Dr. Stanley Khayira, backed the President’s message of unity and outlined the foundation’s strategic goals. He said proceeds from the dinner will support Malawian participation in the upcoming Kulamba Ceremony in Zambia, construction of permanent CHEFO offices, and efforts to preserve Chewa cultural heritage.
