CHAKWERA BACKS LOCAL COUNCILS, VOWS TO UPGRADE RURAL ROADS

President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to inclusive development by allocating K500 million to local councils, a move he says will empower them to implement tailored development projects even in the most remote areas.

Speaking at Emfeni Trading Centre in Mzimba, Chakwera emphasized that decentralizing resources to councils will enhance efficiency and ensure that projects reflect the specific needs of each community.

“It has been hard for the central government to implement as many developments in all councils. However, by giving resources to these councils, we are enabling them to properly develop their areas by personalizing projects to suit their most immediate needs,” said Chakwera.

Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, who accompanied the President, described Chakwera’s visit as a testament to his leadership and care for the people.

“It is a good father who spares time to visit his children to appreciate the challenges they face,” said Mvalo.

Later at Khosolo Trading Centre, Chakwera addressed another gathering where he spoke about improving the country’s road infrastructure. He assured residents that once the ongoing M1 Road rehabilitation is completed, his government will focus on upgrading rural road networks to spur local trade and improve access to markets.

“Word has reached me that Khosolo is one of the country’s largest producers of crops like beans, but poor road networks have been a challenge. Let me assure you, my government will do everything possible to construct more roads,” said Chakwera. “We are serious about boosting local trade.”

Traditional Authority Inkosi Khosolo commended the government for its developmental efforts, including the construction of new secondary schools. However, he also appealed for more teachers’ and health workers’ houses to complement the ongoing projects.

“We appreciate the new schools, but we also need houses for teachers and health workers. As a community, we are ready to support wherever the government needs our assistance,” said the chief.

The president’s tour of Mzimba underscores his administration’s push for grassroots development and local empowerment, as Malawi edges closer to the 2025 general elections.
