President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has described the late Senior Chief Kachindamoto of Dedza as a “soldier who died in the line of duty” whose legacy in protecting children and women will endure for generations.
Minister of Local Government, Richard Chimwendo Banda, delivered the President’s tribute during the funeral ceremony held at Nkosini Headquarters near Mtakataka Primary School in Nsunduzeni Village.
Chimwendo praised the late chief’s remarkable achievements, particularly her decisive role in championing the amendment of laws to prohibit child marriage for anyone under the age of 18.
“We mourn her passing, but at the same time we celebrate her extraordinary life. Her work earned recognition locally and internationally, leaving an indelible mark in Malawi’s history,” he said.

Representing the bereaved family, GVH Chamtulo expressed gratitude to government, the CCAP Church, organisations, and political parties for their support during her illness and funeral. He described Kachindamoto as “a chief of the people” who initiated numerous development projects and often visited her subjects personally, calling her death “a heavy loss.”
United Nations representative Beatrice Kumwenda also hailed the chief as a role model who worked closely with the UN in the global fight against child marriages. She noted that her area became a model for many UN programmes and pledged continued collaboration with her successor to advance her vision.
Senior Chief Kachindamoto, who passed away on Wednesday at Kamuzu Central Hospital aged 57, is survived by her husband, five children, and thirteen grandchildren.
