MALAWI’S FIRST COUPLE EXTENDS FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO NATIONAL TEAMS

Malawi’s First Couple has boosted the country’s preparations for the upcoming Africa Netball Championship with a K10 million donation to the national women’s and men’s teams.

The contribution—K5 million each to the Malawi Queens and the Malawi Kings—was announced on Friday when First Lady Madam Gertrude Mutharika made an unexpected stop at the teams’ training camp at the Griffin Saenda Netball Complex in Lilongwe.

Addressing the players, Madam Mutharika said the gesture reflects the President’s and her own support for the squads as they gear up for the continental contest, which Malawi will host from December 8–14.

“As your top fans, the President and I thought it wise that I should come to cheer you up. And to ease some of your financial challenges, we are making a financial contribution of K5 million to the Queens and K5 million to the Kings,” she said.

The announcement sparked cheers and visible excitement among the athletes, who are intensifying their preparations ahead of the home tournament.

In her remarks, the First Lady also urged the teams to maintain discipline, focus, and determination as they chase glory on home soil, expressing confidence that Malawi can clinch the championship with the right mindset and hard work.
