Parliament resumed its deliberations this morning with the Leader of the Opposition, Simplex Chithyola Banda, rising on point of order 73 to seek clarification on what he described as a disturbing matter.
He informed the House that police officers had been observed around the residence of former President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for the past three days, yet no official explanation had been provided regarding their presence.
Chithyola Banda argued that the situation had raised concern among citizens and stressed the need for Parliament to be updated on the reasons behind the unusual security activity.
Responding to the matter, Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman urged members to allow the issue to be addressed through proper legal channels, noting that it was more appropriate for the courts to handle it.
His advice came a day after a statement by Alfred Chimthere, Deputy Spokesperson for the Malawi Police Service, who said law enforcers had intensified investigations into alleged looting at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
According to Chimthere, the police presence is linked to ongoing efforts to uncover the details surrounding the reported misconduct at the state residence.
Meanwhile, Parliament has proceeded with its scheduled business, and legislators have begun posing questions to various line ministries for oral responses.
