Authorities at Zomba Central Prison on Wednesday intercepted a woman who attempted to smuggle six SIM cards to an inmate by hiding them inside food.
According to prison officials, Angella Sukali of Mwanafumu Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba, was caught on November 26, 2025, after she delivered a meal to convicted robber James Mkwacha, who is serving a 12-year sentence.
The SIM cards were concealed inside boiled Irish potatoes served with fried eggs and tomato stew.
Gatekeeper Warder Esther Richard became suspicious during a routine security check and discovered the hidden contraband.
Prison authorities also confiscated a mobile phone believed to have been used by Sukali and Mkwacha to coordinate the smuggling attempt.
Sukali later admitted that Mkwacha had promised to pay her rent if she successfully brought the SIM cards into the prison.
Acting General Duties Officer, Assistant Superintendent Shadreck Mkwaila, praised Warder Richard for her vigilance and professionalism, noting that such alertness is essential in curbing illicit activities in correctional facilities.
The case has since been handed over to police, and Sukali is expected to face charges related to attempting to smuggle prohibited items into a prison.
