MINISTER NAVICHA SAYS MALAWI TO INTENSIFY ENFORCEMENT AGAINST DIGITAL GBV

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Navicha, MP, says her ministry will intensify enforcement of existing laws to curb gender-based digital violence during and beyond the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

She warned that the ministry will take decisive action against all perpetrators involved in such abuses, stressing that violating women and girls online will no longer go unpunished.

Navicha made the remarks during the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign at Khwisa Primary School Ground in Balaka District, where she underscored that no form of gender-based violence will be tolerated.

The Minister assured stakeholders that her ministry will strengthen legal measures and enhance community engagement as part of efforts to tackle digital gender-based violence, which continues to evolve with technological advancements.

She noted that this commitment forms part of a broader push to address both traditional and emerging forms of abuse that threaten the safety and dignity of women and girls.

NGO Gender Coordination Network chairperson, Maggie Kathewera Banda, added that although Malawi has strong laws, the National Action Plan—currently under review—will help overcome implementation gaps and raise public awareness on gender-based violence.

UNFPA Country Representative, Richard Delate, also reaffirmed the organisation’s support for Malawi in combating gender-based violence.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign runs until 10 December 2025 under the theme: “Unite to End Digital Gender-Based Violence in Malawi.” The launch concluded with the recognition of outstanding community champions, who were awarded bicycles for their efforts.
