Zomba City Council’s disaster risk management officer, Gomezgani Nyasulu, has applauded a 25-year-old resident, Stuward Nankhumawa, for inventing a flood-warning device designed to alert communities when water levels in rivers begin to rise.
According to Nyasulu, the young innovator has demonstrated remarkable skill and technical ability by creating a system that is especially useful during the rainy season, when flooding is common in many areas.
He said the device, which emits an alert when water levels reach dangerous heights, has the potential to strengthen early warning efforts and reduce the risk of loss of life and property.
Nyasulu added that the initiative shows how community-driven solutions can complement government efforts in disaster preparedness, especially in flood-prone regions.
Chairperson for Namalaka disaster risk management in the city, Rhodney Rabson, also welcomed the development, saying the device will help residents remain vigilant during heavy rains.
Rabson explained that the alert system operates in a similar manner to an ambulance siren, sounding loudly to warn people when rivers begin to overflow.
He noted that such technology is crucial for ensuring that communities receive timely warnings, allowing them to take necessary precautions and evacuate when needed.
The council has encouraged other young people to emulate Nankhumawa’s innovation and contribute towards improving community resilience against disasters.
