OPINION: AIP STILL A LIFELINE FOR SMALLHOLDER FARMERS DESPITE SEED PRICE INCREASES

Despite concerns about the rising price of maize seed under the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP), many beneficiaries say the programme still offers important advantages, making it possible for them to purchase inputs they would otherwise not afford.

People who gathered at the subsidised input selling point in Lirangwe explained that even though market prices for seed continue to fluctuate, AIP remains a lifeline for smallholder farmers. They say the programme ensures access to quality seed that would have been out of reach without government support—just as it does with fertiliser.

Anita James from Mpeta Village under Group Village Head Mkumba acknowledged that seed prices have increased this year. However, she stressed that government support has greatly cushioned farmers because the subsidy still covers a significant portion of the cost.

Other farmers noted that the price increases are not caused by AIP alone but are driven by global changes in seed production and supply. As a result, even commercial seed suppliers have raised prices. They argue that, in this context, AIP continues to shield farmers from the full impact of these global price shifts.

While some remain worried about rising prices, many farming communities view AIP as a programme that continues to put agricultural development first—encouraging higher production, promoting access to improved seed, and ensuring that no smallholder farmer is left behind.
