The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government has opened with a strong call for member states to find a lasting solution to the political instability in Madagascar.
The summit is focusing on addressing challenges related to governance and political transition in the island nation.
Malawi is being represented at the meeting by First Vice President Dr Jane Ansah.
Dr Ansah is attending the summit virtually on behalf of Malawi President Professor Peter Mutharika.
In his opening address, SADC Chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of unity among member states.
Ramaphosa, who is also President of the Republic of South Africa, said collective regional efforts are essential to help Madagascar overcome its ongoing transition challenges.
He noted that Madagascar has been experiencing political transition problems since September this year.
During the meeting, member states are expected to adopt resolutions that were passed during an Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit of Heads of Government convened earlier this week.
